Netherlands 3-2 Ukraine: Dumfries’ header denies Ukraine’s comeback

Sun 13 June 2021 | 21:43

Denzel Dumfries’ 85th-minute winner helped Netherlands earn their first victory in a European Championship since 2008 by beating Ukraine 3-2 in Sunday's pulsating Euro 2020 group-stage game in Amsterdam.

Georginio Wijnaldum

and

Dumfries

both were close to scoring for the hosts in the first half, while

Andriy Yarmolenko

and

Roman Yaremchuk

both threatened at the other end for the visitors.

After a goalless first half, Georginio Wijnaldum broke the deadlock for his side after seven minutes in the second half, pouncing on a loose ball to sidefoot in from 12 yards.

Wout Weghorst

doubled their advantage six minutes later and put the Oranje in command.

However, Ukraine launched a comeback through a jaw-dropping curling effort from Andriy Yarmolenko before Roman Yaremchuk equalized with a close-range header.

But the game would ultimately be decided by

Denzel Dumfries

, who was at the center of Netherlands' first two goals. He scored the winner in the 85th minute, somehow directing a relatively tame header past Buschan to secure the hosts all three points.

Ukraine will take on

North Macedonia

on Thursday, while Netherlands will face

Austria

later that day.
