in their opening game in Euro 2020, has talked about his selection for the national team despite his poor form at Manchester City, insisting that he is only trying to repay the national team’s faith and prove himself as a good choice.

Sterling scored his first goal in a major competition for his national team in a very long time after failing to score in Brazil 2014, France 2016, and Russia 2018 and says that he is determined to show his highest quality for his national team despite his poor form at club level during this season.

"I've always said if I play at Wembley in a major tournament, in my back garden, I'm scoring,"

Sterling told BBC Sport.

"It's great to finally do that.

"To be honest, I always said to myself if I come here, growing up two minutes down the road, I know I have to score here. It was a great feeling to actually do it.

"There's different reasons why I haven't scored for my club, but it's irrelevant now. I'm here with England, I'm enjoying my football and I'm happy to score.

"Have I justified my selection? I'm trying [to do so]."

England has won all the games that Sterling has scored in them, which are 11 games in total, making him the first in their history to have a 100% winning rate when scoring with 11 games.

He has played 23 games for his national team at Wembley Stadium, and he hasn’t lost any of them, winning 21 and drawing 2, which another record for him.
