Bayern out of the race for Saul Niguez

Sun 13 June 2021 | 5:44

The Spanish midfielder has been heavily linked with a move away from Wanda Metropolitano.

Saul Niguez

was a key player for

Atletico Madrid

in their 2020-21 campaign, where they won their first league title since 2014. The midfielder featured in 33 league matches for

Diego Simeone

’s side, scoring two goals and providing an assist. Niguez has attracted interest from top European clubs ahead of the summer transfer window. However, according to

Marca

,

Bayern Munich

won’t be in the race to sign the player.

“There will be no major transfers. You can forget about it”

, former president

Uli Hoeneß

told

Sport 1

.

“That was discussed between the board of directors in their last meeting.”

Earlier this week, the club’s current president

Herbert Heiner

also insisted that Bayern are unlikely to be making any major moves in the upcoming transfer window.

Aside from Bayern,

Manchester United

and

Manchester City

are the main suitors for Niguez. The Red Devils pursued a deal for the player last summer, but the negotiations were blocked by Atletico’s demand for a €100m fee plus the player's release clause. The 26-year-old, who was left out of Spain’s squad for Euro 2020, still has five years on his contract and might be available for a fee of around €60m.
