PSG jumped ahead of Barcelona to get Georginio Wijnaldum’s signature, who is on international duty.
revealed that the reason behind him joining
was that they were “faster and more decisive” whereas talks with Barcelona were stopped.
The Netherlands international’s contract with
is due to expire this month and his move to Ligue 1 side is confirmed.
However, the 30-year-old, who led his side with eight goals in Euro 2020 qualifying, was speculated to make a move to Barca and link up with Ronald Koeman.
After many weeks, no deals were made, which led to PSG starting their move.
Wijnaldum said on Saturday:
"I negotiated with Barcelona for four weeks and unfortunately we didn't [agree].
"Paris Saint-Germain were faster and more decisive. And the project they have there appeals to me very much.
"It was a tough choice. I have to say that I too thought I would go to Barcelona, also because Barcelona was the only club that was really interested at the time.
"But we couldn't [agree] and with PSG we did."
Wijnaldum has played in 235 games for the Reds in five years, meeting the back of the net 22 times and contributing 15 assists, but he is concentrating on the Euros now.
The Netherlands will go against Ukraine on Sunday, planning to win a final match for the first time since 2008.
I'm very happy to have been able to arrange it before the European Championship,"
Wijnaldum said of his move.
"With the European Championship, you just want to be 100 per cent focused on the tournament. It was a hectic week, though, where I had to make choices.
"But I'm glad that this doesn't play during the European Championship anymore."
