Gunes: We got distracted against Italy

Sat 12 June 2021 | 8:40

The Turkey boss admits his side lost control of the game against the Azzurri.

Turkey

were defeated 3-0 by

Italy

in the first match of their Euro 2020 campaign.

Senol Gunes

' side held Italy goalless in the first half but they were not able to maintain the same quality throughout the match. An own goal by

Merih Demiral

opened the scoring for Italy and the Azzuri soon took complete control of the game.

Roberto Mancini

’s team managed to get two more goals by

Ciro Immobile

and

Lorenzo Insigne

as they left Turkey without a point in the Group A standings.

Gunes told a post-match press conference:

"We started to lose the ball and couldn't get forward. Italy were better – we lost to the better team,

"They were more dominant than us, we lost the ball so many times and this just gave the advantage to our opponent.

"After we conceded the first goal we just really got distracted and lost control of the game."

Turkey have lost their debut matches in all of the major tournaments they have entered. However, this has not prevented them from achieving success in those campaigns. Gunes' team will pay close attention to their Group A rivals from now on.

Wales

will play

Switzerland

on Saturday in the group’s second game.

Gunes added:

"I can say, technically speaking, we played a very strong Italian team," Gunes said. "I’m not very satisfied with the score. I was expecting better football here.

"But even if we lose or win, the competition will continue. We just lost against a host team and we have two more important games against Wales and Switzerland.

"We’ll tidy ourselves up and will start to prepare for those. Italy used the pitch very well, they just kept the ball and physically we fell from the game."

Turkey will continue the group stage with two matches against Wales and Switzerland on June 16 and 20.
