Argentina deserved the three points - Scaloni

Wed 09 June 2021 | 9:31

Argentina were leading the battle against Colombia 2-0 early doors but ended the game with a draw in their 2022 World Cup qualifier.

Lionel Scaloni

, the Argentina manager, believes his team deserved to grab all three points after drawing 2-2 with Colombia on Tuesday.

During the first eight minutes of the clash, La Albiceleste managed to meet the target twice but Colombia pushed back with Miguel Borja’s last-minute goal.

Argentina are sitting second, having gained 12 points from the six qualifier for the 2022 World Cup, but they are six points behind Brazil.

"

When you think it's all done, no, it's not,"

Scaloni told reporters post-game.

"We're leaving with one point when we deserved all three. Argentina deserved to win.

"Up until the 94th minute, what we were doing was really good and the last play gave them a point, it wasn’t deserved.

"We deserved the three points. I have to congratulate the players because they played a good match in the heat on a difficult pitch against a good opponent."

Argentina could have secured a victory as they had many chances, including

Lionel Messi

’s two shots which were saved by goalkeeper David Ospina, whereas

Nicolas Gonzalez

hit the woodwork.

Luis Muriel was substituted in to find the target for Colombia in a 51st minute penalty. Juan Foyth has also made a mistake in what lead to Borja’s equalizer, but the manager did not slam him specifically.

"

It's individual errors not defensive,"

he said.

"The defensive play of the team was perfect up until that play. It was a specific error and nothing more.

"It's the last play and it changes the entire match. The rest of the 94 minutes and a half were perfect."

Argentina are getting ready for the Copa America next, which starts on Monday for them with a battle against Chile.
