Mon 07 June 2021 | 4:35

Germany won the U21 European Championship on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Portugal.

Manchester City

striker

Lukas Nmecha

scored the only goal of the game as Germany beat Portugal to win the Euro U21 for the second time in three tournaments.

Lukas Nmecha

, currently on loan at

Anderlecht

from Manchester City, scored the only goal of the game, rounding the goalkeeper and slotting home following an excellent pass from

Wolfsburg

's

Ridle Baku

.

Portugal had enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, with

Tiago

Tomas

and

Diogo Dalot

both missing opportunities, before

Florian Wirtz

, the

Bayer Leverkusen

starlet who netted a brace as Germany beat the Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-finals, also hit the bar in the first half.

Portugal have now lost all three finals they have appeared in.

Hamburg-born forward Nmecha, who was raised in England and played for England at under-21 level before switching to Germany in 2019, finishes the tournament as leading scorer with four goals.

Nmecha also scored the winner for England U19 in the 2017 European Championship final against Portugal.

Portugal's journey to this year's final had included a 2-0 win over England in March.

Rui Jorge's side knocked out defending champions Spain in the semi-finals.

Despite crisp passing and neat skills in the midfield, Portugal failed to deliver the necessary end product in the final third, recording only one shot on target to Germany's six.
