Johan Cruyff would turn over in his grave - Ronald De Boer

Sun 06 June 2021 | 12:15

Former Dutch midfielder Ronald de Boer has spoken about Netherlands tactics and formation under his brother, Frank de Boer.

Ronald de Boer

understands his brother, Frank’s insistence in using the 5-3-2 formation, however, he believes

‘Johan Cruyff would turn over in his grave’

if he could see such performance from the Dutch internationals.

Netherlands faced Scotland in their first pre-Euro 2020 match, in which the Dutchmen were held to a 2-2 draw.

Frank de Boer used a more defensive system [5-3-2] instead of the Dutch’s normal [4-3-3] in the Scotland clash, which led to lots of criticism towards the team's performance.

Former Netherlands international and Frank’s brother, Ronald, has now commented on the positive features as well as the shortcomings of such formation. In an interview with

De Telegraaf

, De Boer said:

"Johan Cruyff would turn over in his grave.

"But he would also do that if he saw the games of Barcelona under Ronald Koeman. While it is still a very attractive system, it is about how you fill it in.

"When you have two very good opponents against you, it is useful to put someone between your two central defenders. Then you always have certainty and you also play offensively."
