Diego Simeone close to extending with Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is on the verge of signing a new two-year deal at the club ahead of the 2021/22 La Liga campaign.

led Atletico to their first league title since 2014 at the back end of 2020/21, as they held off the challenge of

in the final weeks of the campaign.

and according to reports from Cadena COPE, via

, the La Liga champions have advanced in their talks over a contract extension with his representatives.

Simeone’s current deal at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano expires at the end of next season but he is keen to not let anything distract his side from their title defense.

The 51-year-old is currently the highest-paid manager in world football and Atletico CEO

Miguel Angel Gil Marin

is willing to keep the same conditions on a new deal until the end of 2023/24.

Simeone was unveiled as the new Atlético Madrid coach in 2011, succeeding

Gregorio Manzano

.

His biggest managerial success with Atletico Madrid are two La Liga titles, winning Copa del Rey once, two UEFA Europa Leagues, two UEFA Super Cups, as well as being runner-up of the UEFA Champions League twice.
