Pioli: We should confirm Milan’s position next season

The Rossoneri coach believes his side must build on their current form next season.

AC Milan

finished their 2020-21 campaign in second place on the Serie A table, securing their first Champions League spot in seven years.

Stefano Pioli

is keen to improve his team ahead of their next campaign as he wants the team to confirm their current position. The former

boss enters the last year of his contract at San Siro but says he is not focused on his contract negotiations.

“The renewal of my contract is not the priority,” the 55-year-old told La Repubblica. “With Maldini and Massara we will talk above all about how to improve the team ahead of the Champions League.

“It must be the year of our confirmation. I feel lucky to work in this club and with this group. I would have liked to emulate the Giro d’Italia feat of my idol [Gianni] Bugno, to lead from start to finish.

“But the drop in form was normal. We have never had doubts about the principles of the game, working on the details.”

Asked about the club’s sporting directors and their work in the transfer market, Pioli responded:

“My managers have already shown creativity,” he said. “Apart from [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic, on whom I had obviously expressed a positive opinion, I’m thinking of [Simon] Kjaer and [Alexis] Saelemaekers, of [Fikayo] Tomori, whom I didn’t know.

“The important thing is to have build a base of 10 to 12 top-team players, like Theo Hernandez, Tomori, Kjaer, [Franck] Kessie, [Davide] Calabria, [Hakan] Calhanoglu, Ibrahimovic.”

Milan are eager to improve their firepower ahead of the next season. The Rossoneri are reportedly linked with summer moves for

Mauro Icardi

Olivier Giroud

as they are interested in adding an experienced player to their final third.

“Now we have to improve the group, because confirming our position is the most difficult thing.”

Asked about

Gianluigi Donnarumma

and his failed contract negotiations with Milan, Pioli responded:

“He’s an exemplary professional,” Pioli said. “He’s focused on what happens on the pitch. Then, the negotiations off it can work or not.

“We talked and thanked each other, it’s a sincere relationship. I wish him all the best for the European Championship.”

Donnarumma will be available as a free agent in the summer. The goalkeeper has been linked with a move to

in recent weeks as they are preparing to sell

Wojciech Szczesny

in the summer.
