Suarez: Koeman has no personality

Tue 25 May 2021 | 10:02

The Uruguayan striker left Barcelona on a free transfer last summer.

Luis Suarez

won the La Liga title for the fifth time in his career on Saturday. The Uruguayan completed his spectacular performances for

Atletico Madrid

with a match-winner against

Real Valladolid

as

Diego Simeone

’s side won their first league trophy since 2014. The striker joined Atletico last summer, following

Barcelona

’s shocking decision to let him leave the club on a free transfer. In an interview with

El Partidazo de COPE

, the former Blaugrana striker spoke about the transfer.

"I’m never going to go against Barcelona, they have given me everything and allowed me to get to the elite, but obviously the president [Josep Maria Bartomeu] said everything in the press instead of calling me."

Suarez said.

"The moment they wanted Leo [Messi] to stay they called me to use me to convince him, to talk to [Antoine] Griezmann… so why didn’t they call me when they wanted me to leave?

"Or why did the coach not come and tell me that he does not count on me because he wants another type of striker?

"Koeman told me I wasn’t in his plans, then he said: 'If we don’t figure this out by tomorrow, you’re back in my plans and I’m counting on you against Villarreal'.

"I saw then that the man had no personality. He was not strong enough to tell me I was not needed. The decision [to sell] came from the board."

Suarez was a key player in Atletico’s title-winning campaign. The experienced striker scored 21 goals and provided 3 assists in his 32 league matches for the Rojiblancos.
