Deschamps admits "things have changed" with Karim Benzema

The Real Madrid striker was recalled to the national team for the first time in five years.

Karim Benzema

turned out to be

Didier Deschamps

’ shocking addition to Les Bleus’ squad ahead of Euro 2020. The Blancos striker was banned from the national team due to being involved in a blackmail controversy with

Mathieu Valbuena

in 2015. Benzema later accused Deschamps of

"bowing to pressure from a racist part of France"

by excluding him. The pair’s relationship is not perfect, but Deschamps says he has put his spat with the 33-year-old behind him.

"I won't talk about our discussion. But it was very, very long: there were a lot of exchanges,"

Deschamps told

Telefoot

.

"What is important is today and tomorrow. The fact that he did not come back before did not prevent the French team from having good results."

He added:

"Things have changed. Me, and certainly Karim's side too, of course"

"I'm not going to tell you when, how, if it was possible before. The conditions were not met, they are today. If I made this decision, you can imagine that it was fine."

France will play their first 'Group of Death' match against

Germany

on June 15. Deschamps’ side will continue the group stage with matches against

Hungary

and

Portugal

on June 19 and 23.
