Guardiola wishes to add a new prolific striker to Man City squad

Sun 23 May 2021 | 8:42

The City manager expressed his desire to recruit a new centre-forward.

Pep Guardiola

is eager to add a new striker to

Manchester City

as

Sergio Aguero

is planning to depart and the club is looking for a replacement for the Argentine.

Man City have been eyeing Borussia Dortmund’s

Erling Haaland

for a long time, whereas

Harry Kane

’s desire to depart Tottenham and play elsewhere has thrown his name into the list.

I’d love to have a striker who got 50 goals a season, honestly,”

Guardiola told the

Mirror

.<em>

“At the same time, I don’t like to put all the pressure on one player.

“In Barcelona, Lionel Messi, every season since he was born, scored 50 a season.

“Thierry Henry scored a lot in the first season and Samuel Eto’o scored a lot - what a striker.”

Although adding star strikers like Haaland and Kane to the squad will be prolific, City’s other attacking players have the potential to meet the back of the net.

Ilkay Gundogan, Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez have met the target 13, 10 and 9 times respectively in the Premier League this season.

The club manager knows that some of the pressure should be taken off the central striker, but is aware of the worth of a player like Aguero.

When you are to win titles, especially the Premier League, with just one guy you won’t win it,”

he said.

“You need more - and the statistics speak for themselves.

“You need three guys with more than 10, scoring 12 or 15, to be competitive.

“But when you have a guy who can get 25 to 30 it helps a lot, honestly.

“We will try for the way we play for everyone to be involved.”
