FIFA has agreed to carry out a feasibility study on staging the World Cup every two years.

The proposal, cutting the gap between each men’s and women’s World Cup in half, was brought by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) before the 71st FIFA Congress.

Addressing this year's Congress, Saudi Football Federation president

Yasser Al Misehal

said,

"We believe the future of football is at a critical juncture. The many issues that football has faced have now been further exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic,"

"It is time to review how the global game is structured and to consider what is best for the future of our sport.

"This should include whether the current four-year cycle remains the optimum basis for how football is managed both from a competition and commercial perspective.

FIFA president

Gianni Infantino

called the proposal “eloquent and detailed” as a majority of 166 to 22 delegates voted in favor of it.

Infantino has said the study will be carried out into the qualification systems for the tournaments.
