Thu 20 May 2021 | 10:27

Manchester City Portuguese defender has been named the Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association.

Although

Manchester City

did not have a good start to the Premier League this season, the Citizens managed to find their perfect form and climbed to the top of the table with consecutive victories.

One of the main reasons for Man City’s success has been their strong defensive line, in which the Citizens’ summer signing

Ruben Dias

has performed exceptionally well since joining the Manchester Blues.

The Portuguese defender who performed to his fullest in his 31 Premier league outings, has also played a key role in City’s European success and reaching the Champions League final.

Dias has now been crowned as the Footballer of the Year by the FWA, winning more than 50 percent of the votes, beating his teammate

Kevin De Bruyne

and Tottenham ace

Harry Kane

.

Being delighted with his award, the 24-year-old said:

"It's a huge privilege, I'm very, very happy. I could not have done it without the success of the team, without everyone in the team deserving this award. Only by that, as a defender, am I able to be here to receive this prize.

"Essentially, when I came I wanted to meet everyone as fast as possible, understand how the team plays. I knew the manager and the players, I knew a bit about the philosophy of the club because I am fan of football and I know City from the last few years.

"I had an idea of what I was coming to and I wanted to integrate myself as fast as possible."
