Immobile: I can’t accept Cairo’s serious defamatory insults

Wed 19 May 2021 | 8:18

The Italy international accused Urbano Cairo, Torino’s president, of ‘serious defamatory insults’ through a statement following a clean sheet draw with Lazio.

When the clash ended, there was a lot of tension as

Urbano Cairo

was arguing with

Lazio

’s

Claudio Lotito

.

The one point still sealed Torino’s place above the relegation zone on the

Serie A

table and

Ciro Immobile

fired a penalty onto the upright before

Manuel Lazzari

failed to meet the back of the net.

The Lazio striker took the matter into

Instagram

and released a statement, saying:

“Everyone knows who Ciro Immobile is. On the pitch and above all off it. I can accept criticism to the player, not serious, defamatory insults to the man I am. Above all if these come from directors in the football world.

“At the end of this evening’s game, Torino President Urbano Cairo walked up to me at the entrance to the Lazio locker room and started insulting me, verbally attacking me and accusing me of playing ‘with bloodshot eyes’ and other things regarding the first game this season against Torino, going so far as to suggest I played that game while positive for COVID.

“I will never stop thanking President Cairo for giving me the chance to make my mark at Torino as a player, but I cannot let this go, as it is an incident that goes beyond the football realm.

“Everyone knows who Ciro Immobile is: a player, yes, but above all a man who respects the rules and the principles of fair play. I cannot tolerate insults and accusations that defame, without any valid reason, my person.”

‘Playing with bloodshot eyes’ is a phrase in Italian that refers to a person who is really determined and competitive to win that he bursts blood vessels.

The two clubs have been in conflict this season, when in their last game, Torino were about to win 3-2 but they were vanquished 4-3.

It was later announced that Immobile and a few other players’ Covid-19 results were inconclusive and they were not permitted to feature in the Champions League; however, they were allowed to play in Serie A.

The Salerno clinic that performed the test is being investigated. Lotito was fined and banned for seven months with their doctor being suspended for 12 months.
