Liverpool vs. Burnley: Will the Reds Make it to the Top 4?

A few days ago, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson made history by scoring an absolutely stunning header in the team’s match against West Brom, in a move that manager Jürgen Klopp called, for lack of a better word, “Insane, worldie, perfect”.

The win at The Hawthorns was most welcome but not enough to ensure Liverpool finishes the Premier League season in the top four. There are still two hurdles to overcome: Burnley and Crystal Palace. On paper, Liverpool’s run-in at Burnley looks like a winner - but don’t forget that in football, nothing is written in stone.

The Reds’ regained their form

Liverpool has won six of their last eight league games, finishing two of them at draws. The team has apparently regained its form after quite a few disappointing matches earlier in the season.

This time, they won’t have the advantage of their home turf, but the odds at

still remain in their favour, considering that the Reds have only lost one of their last nine away matches, winning seven, and finishing one in a draw. The fact that the grandstands will, for the first time in months, filled with fans - Burnley fans, in this case, as the match will be played at Turf Moor - shouldn’t be a problem, albeit the home team will likely get a bit of extra energy from the fans’ cheers.

Burnley, not so much

Burnley’s recent history is not that encouraging, though. The Clarets’ loss to Leeds last Saturday is their ninth league game lost on home turf, a disappointing club record at best. The team lost four of their last six Premier League matches, winning just two.

However, they did beat Liverpool once this season - to make things worse, the Clarets beat the Reds at Anfield, too - so they know that they can, indeed, do it. Whether they’ll be able to tomorrow, it remains to be seen. If they do, it will be another club record - Burnley didn’t defeat Liverpool twice in the same season since 1929.

Injuries

On the Reds’ side, there is unfortunate news: Diogo Jota will miss the final matches of the team’s Premier League season due to a foot injury. On the other hand, Sadio Mane will be back - after snubbing Klopp’s handshake after warming the bench at Old Trafford. The situation has been resolved, the news says, so he’ll be back in business. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, in turn, may be back for the match - news about his fitness after recovering from his illness is expected as we speak.

On Burnley’s side, Nick Pope will likely be out due to a knee injury, and the participation of Dale Stephens is also in question.

Overall, the odds seem to be in Liverpool’s favour in tomorrow’s clash at Turf Moor - but remember, we may indeed be in for a surprise. But if the Reds succeed, they will be one step closer to their desired top-four position in this Premier League season - and next year’s Champions League.
