Jadon Sancho closing in on Beckham's superb assist record

Sun 16 May 2021 | 17:50

As he set up two goals for the Bundesliga team against Mainz, the England international brought his tally to 11 goals.

After assisting on two goals for Borussia Dortmund on Sunday, Jadon Sancho now has ten

assists for the third year in a row.

In the first half of the Bundesliga match against Mainz, the winger assisted Raphael Guerreiro and Marco Reus, giving his side a two-goal advantage at the break.

The 21-year-old striker reached double figures for the season with Guerreiro's assist, and his second assist brought his total to 11. This season, he has also scored eight goals in the German Bundesliga.

David Beckham

was the last Englishman to record ten or more assists in one of Europe's big five leagues.

Beckham, who has played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain, has crossed double digits for four years in a row, so Sancho only needs one more stellar season to equal the feat.

Dortmund will qualify for the

Champions League

group stage next season if they win at Mainz on Sunday. If Edin Terzic's team maintains its lead, they will be assured a top-four finish with one game remaining.

They'd be four points ahead of fifth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, who lost 4-3 to Schalke in their final game of the season on Saturday.
