Werner Bremen appoint Schaaf after sacking Kohfeldt

The Werder Bremen manager led his side to some of their greatest glories, with the task of preventing relegation.

Werder Bremen

have been dismissed by

Florian Kohfeldt

and assigned

Thomas Schaaf

as they aim to avoid relegation in Bundesliga.

Kohfeldt was sacked after their 2-1 loss to Augsburg on Saturday, which was the coach’s eighth in their nine matches.

Having earned only one out of 27, they are sitting in the relegation play-off place, with only one point behind Arminia Bielefeld and one above Cologne.

Kohfeldt helped the club last season as they avoided the drop. However, he is not able to secure their safety this season as Schaaf is appointed to lead the club in their final battle against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Schaaf contributed to six trophies when he last coached the club from 1999 to 2013.

"

Unfortunately, after the game in Augsburg, we were no longer convinced that we would be able to stay up with Florian Kohfeldt,"

said sporting director Frank Baumann.

"We are happy that Thomas is taking on this task in such a precarious situation for the club.

"We hope that he can bring his experience to the table and get the players ready for the last game of the season."
