Benzema deserves France return, says Wenger

Mon 03 May 2021 | 8:34

The former Gunners boss believes the Blancos striker can help his country’s national team in the upcoming Euro 2020 tournament.

Having scored 28 goals in 41 matches for

Real Madrid

across all competitions,

Karim Benzema

has enjoyed incredible form this season. However, his performances have not changed his situation regarding the national team as he continues to be absent in Les Bleus’ squad. The French striker’s involvement in a blackmail controversy with Mathieu Valbuena ended his national team career in 2015. As France prepare themselves to win their first European title in twenty years,

Arsene Wenger

believes the experienced striker must be given a chance to play a role in

Didier Deschamps

’ plans.

“The non-call up of Benzema is not dependent on the quality of the player,”

Wenger told an interview with EFE, reported via

Diario AS

“For me, Benzema deserves 100% to be summoned to the European Championship.

“He could play for any national team. It is because of an extra and non-sport problem that he is not playing.

“He has been playing for Real Madrid for more than ten years as a starter, and his record is excellent.”

Deschamps has previously indicated that he doesn’t want to change his opinion about Benzema’s situation.

Antoine Griezmann

Kylian Mbappe

are currently Deschamps’ first choices for the attacking pair.
