Coutinho set to miss the rest of the season

The Brazilian star has undergone a new surgery that will keep him from playing again in the current season.

Philippe Coutinho

was a regular starter for

Barcelona

in the first half of the season as he showed glimpses of his best form for the Catalan club. However, he has been sidelined since September due to a serious meniscus problem. Having gone under the knife in October, Coutinho was expected to make his return in April but the club has announced the 28-year-old has undergone a new surgery.

"Phil Coutinho had a meniscal cyst in his left knee successfully operated on by Dr Rodrigo Lasmar, under the supervision of the club's medical services team,"

a statement on

Barca's official Twitter account

reads.

"Coutinho is out and his recovery will determine his availability."

Coutinho is expected to miss the rest of the season as Barcelona are continuing their race for both La Liga and Copa del Rey titles. Having collected 65 points from 29 matches, the Blaugrana sit second in the league table behind

Atletico Madrid

. They are also set to meet

Athletic Bilbao

in Copa del Rey final on April 17.
