Andros Townsend and Jetro Willems may return to Newcastle

Sun 04 April 2021 | 16:08

Newcastle are eyeing Andros Townsend and Jetro Willems as potential summer targets.

The duo’s contracts are due to expire when the season ends.

Newcastle

are also interested in Sheffield United midfielder John Lundstram and Kyle Bartley, West Brom’s defender.

Based on reports from

Chronicle Live

, given the financial crisis and a tight budget, Newcastle are keeping tabs on the players that will become free agents soon.

The England international

Andros Townsend

moved to Newcastle in January 2016 on a £12 million transfer fee but joined

Crystal Palace

that summer after they paid his £13 million release clause. The 29-year-old made his mark, however, meeting the back of the net four times in 13 matches he played under the reign of Steve McClaren and then Rafael Benitez.

Jetro Willems

, on the other hand, played in 20 games on a loan spell at Newcastle last season, finding the target twice. However, he sustained an injury in January.

The 27-year-old did not make an appearance for Eintracht at all this season, but Newcastle are not put off by that.

Newcastle are struggling to survive in the

Premier League

as they have only managed to win two of their last 18 league clashes and are sitting 17th on the table, getting ready to face Tottenham this weekend.
