Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema's trial for "complicity in attempted blackmail" over a sex tape involving former France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena will be held in October.
On Tuesday, the Versailles prosecutor's office confirmed that
will face trial from October 20-22.
The 33-year-old striker is said to have been involved in a blackmail attempt in 2015, concerning a sex tape. Benzema was allegedly asked to speak to Valbuena about the threat during a France national team camp.
Benzema made 81 international appearances but has not been called for his country since the affair came to light in 2015. He has since missed out on multiple major tournaments, including Euro 2016 in his homeland and France’s glory in the World Cup in 2018.
The Frenchman will have to answer to court in Versailles from 20 to 22 October.
Benzema reacted to the trial date being set on his Instagram story, saying
: "Yes, finally, let's go. Let the masquerade end forever."
