Wijnaldum plays down touchline confrontation with Frank de Boer
The Dutch midfielder was upset about being substituted during Netherlands’ match against Latvia.
Netherlands won their World Cup qualifying match against Latvia with a 2-0 result on Saturday.
Steven Berghuisopened the scoring for
Frank de Boer
’s team in the 32nd minute and
Luuk de Jongdoubled their lead in the second half.
Georginio Wijnaldumwas replaced with
Donny van de Beekin the 80th minute, but the Liverpool midfielder was upset by De Boer’s decision.
"I was a bit disappointed, but we shouldn't make it bigger than it is,"
he told
NOS.
"I really wanted to stay on, because I had fun on the field and felt that I could score another goal, but the coach and I have already talked about it. This is nothing bad.
"On the one hand I am very disappointed, on the other hand it is good for the group feeling when other guys also play."
The 50-year-old coach was asked about his late substitutions in a post-match interview.
"Memphis wanted to score and he was close a few times. I think he was more concerned with that than with the switch,"
the coach said.
"Gini has played so much, I told him to understand that we are 24 men. They also need to get the feeling that they belong.
"

on Tuesday.
