Belgium manager Roberto Martinez hailed the ‘incredible personality’ of his players after a 3-1 victory over Wales in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers on Wednesday.

Harry Wilson

gave Wales a surprise 10th-minute lead at Den Dreef Stadion in Belgium but top-ranked Belgium came from behind to win with goals from

Kevin De Bruyne

,

Thorgan Hazard

, and

Romelu Lukaku

.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult game. The moment we conceded the first goal I thought Wales had started better than us,”

Martinez said at a press conference.

“They were approaching the match in the right way.

“At that point we therefore had two choices: either to accept it and lose or to show personality and courage to overturn everything.

“And my team did the latter, we never accepted defeat. I was really impressed by the incredible personality that my players put on the pitch.

Martinez was happy to see

Inter

forward

Romelu Lukaku

’s contribution in defense.

“Lukaku continued to defend, [Kevin] de Bruyne took the command, [Youri] Tielemans and [Leander] Dendoncker covered their ground, the defense was calm, [Thibaut] Courtois made good choices.

“It wasn’t our best performance, but the points claimed are important.”

Belgium

now turn their focus to their away game against the

Czech Republic

on Saturday before they host

Belarus

on March 30.
