European Champions Portugal kicked off their 2022 World Cup qualifiers with a narrow 1-0 win against Azerbaijan in Turin on Wednesday.

Maksim Medvedev

scored a clumsy own goal in the first half, which secured the reigning European champions all three points at the Allianz Stadium.

Portugal

head coach

Fernando Santos

, who celebrated his 50th victory in charge of Portugal, was not all concerned about his side’s performance and highlighted the importance of victory.

"We won, which was the most important thing,"

he told RTP.

"These games can be difficult.

"I expected to win more comfortably, but we must not draw conclusions. We can see what went well and didn't.

He also heaped praise on

Atletico Madrid

striker

Joao Felix

for the impact he made on the game after he came off the bench 15 minutes from time.

"The team improved with the entry of Joao,"

Santos said.

"There was more circulation to our play and he played a part in one of our best moves - it was brilliant."

Santos now turns his focus to the game against

Serbia

, who beat the

Republic of Ireland

3-2.

Santos added

: "Entering that game with victory was essential and now we are going to talk as a group and analyze the game.

"The Serbia match will be different [to the Azerbaijan one], but I always maintain confidence in my players."
