Ajax to appeal against Onana’s 12-month ban following substance use

is expected to be out of action for the 12 upcoming months following his Furosemide use, but the

goalkeeper is yet to give up on his fight as his club set to appeal against his year-long ban.    

The

side are currently preparing to present their appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) within the next two months as they claim that Onana accidentally took Furosemide, which was meant to be for his wife.

On the other hand, the Dutch Association of Professional Footballers (VVCS) believe that the length of the player’s ban, which is also preventing him from training with Ajax, is

“disproportionate”

and

“incomprehensible”

.

Since the motion of the ban on February 5th, the stopper has been training with a personal trainer at his own private home gym alongside a goalkeeping coach as they wait for the hearing of his case in hope of getting a sentence reduction.

Among Onana’s former admirers are Chelsea, Barcelona, and Tottenham.

Ajax hope to discuss the

international’s future ahead of his contract expiration in June 2022, but if the stopper refuses to extend his stay at the Dutch club, Ajax will very likely shift their attention to

's Hugo Souza.

In a statement regarding Onana’s ban, Ajax managing director, Edwin van der Sar said:

“We explicitly renounce performance-enhancing drugs, we obviously stand for a clean sport.”

"This is a terrible setback, for Andre himself but certainly also for us as a club. Andre is a top goalkeeper, who has proven his worth for Ajax for years and is very popular with the fans.”

"We had hoped for a conditional suspension or for a suspension much shorter than these 12 months, because it was arguably not intended to strengthen his body and thus improve his performance.”

Onana’s current ban will not only prevent the goalkeeper from taking part in Ajax’s domestic matches but it will also deny him the chance of making appearances in their European games including their upcoming Europa League clash with

The 24-year-old is expected to miss Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations as well since his ban extends till February 2022.
