Man City to race Real Madrid over Sporting defender

Mon 15 March 2021 | 20:42

Manchester City are hoping to beat Sporting's left-back from Arsenal, Liverpool, Juventus and Real Madrid.

Manchester City believe they can beat

Real Madrid

to sign Sporting defender Nuno Mendes.

According to

AS

, the 18-year-old Benfica left-back has attracted the attention of several clubs in Europe, including City. The Citizens hope to get his approval as soon as possible and finalize the contract before another club can take action.

Pep Guardiola is looking to sign a player to bolster his left-back, marking the end of Benjamin Mendy's four-year career at Etihad. Mendy, who joined

City

from Monaco in 2017 for 52 million pounds, played just 66 games for City due to a number of injuries and failed to show his full potential.

He has made eight appearances for City in the Premier League this season and has been favored by Olexander Zinchenko for most of the season.

Mendes, who made his Sporting debut in June, became a key player after Marcos Acuna left for Sevilla. He has played in all but four of Sporting's games and his side are on track to win their 19th league title.

It remains to be seen which European giants will be more successful in competing for him.
