Wijnaldum addresses contract situation following Fulham defeat

Mon 08 March 2021 | 10:08

The Netherlands international has talked about the rumors regarding his future at Anfield after the run of six consecutive home defeats.

Georginio Wijnaldum

addressed his contract situation following

Liverpool

’s loss to

Fulham

and believes that "the most important thing right now is that we fix things as a team".

The 30-year-old’s contract is due to expire in a few months and has not yet signed an extension with the Reds.

The midfielder played in the clash that resulted in extending their run of defeated home games and talked about his future plans.

"

If you’re a fan and you support the team - you support the player and what they do with me,

" Wijnaldum told

beIN Sports

.

"

You want to hear what’s going to happen but on the other side, for me, if there’s nothing to say and no news I cannot say something.

"I hope they can understand that and I hope they will stay patient until there’s news.

"The most important thing right now is that we fix things in the game as a team and we get results.

"Talking about an individual, in this case about me and my contract situation - because I just said there’s no news, I think we can focus on better things than on my situation.

"When there is news, we will bring it out."

Barcelona

are the favorite destination for the Netherlands international if he decides to depart in the summer.

Ronald Koeman

is keeping tabs on the midfielder and plans to reunite with him at Camp Nou, having been his coach at the national team. Barcelona are facing a financial crisis, which keeps them from making big offers; Wijnaldum, however, is going to depart as a free agent in June.

Liverpool purchased Wijnaldum for a fee of £23 million from Newcastle in 2016 and he has worked hard under the reign of

Jurgen Klopp

. He has made 224 appearances for the Reds and met the target 22 times, contributing to the

Premier League

title as well as Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.
