'We did not put in a great performance' - Fonseca

Sun 07 March 2021 | 15:51

The Roma manager is satisfied with the overall performance of his men, but believes that this was not their best performance.

Paulo Fonseca

expressed his mixed feelings to

Sky Sport Italia

after the victory gained against

Genoa

, with the only goal of the game scored by

Mancini

in the 24th minute of the match.

Fonseca believes that

Roma

can make a better performance, and the ball-moving was too predictable.

He said:

“We did not put in a great performance. We didn’t have many opportunities, neither did Genoa, so it wasn’t the way I think this team can play and usually does play.

“We were slow, moving the ball around too predictably. Genoa sat quite deep, but we can still do better,”

He pointed out that

Dzeko

will be able to join the team in a few days and then added:

"It was a difficult game for

Borja Mayoral

, as Genoa sat deep and those are the trickiest games for a striker.

“Borja worked well for the team to try to create spaces and draw defenders out. It won’t be easy for Pedro to play as a center-forward, but Henrikh Mkhitaryan has done. It can be an option, otherwise we’ve got Dzek."

Fonseca is content to be in the top four of the Serie A table. However, Roma have not been able to beat the top three clubs during the last matches against them, and the head coach hopes to improve against the top flight clubs:

“We have to take it one game at a time. Now we’ve got Shakhtar Donetsk, which will be difficult in the Europa League. We will try to improve against the bigger clubs and hope to finish in the top four, so we know that we cannot afford a mistake.”
