Simeone trying to win a home derby after six years

Sun 07 March 2021 | 11:22

Atletico Madrid has been without a victory in home derbies since 2015.

Simeone

’s men see themselves at the top of the

La Liga

table, and a win in the Madrid derby can help them feel more comfortable about their position, but

Atletico

has not won a home game against

Real Madrid

since their 4-0 victory against them in 2015.

Simeone knows the importance of the derby better than anyone considering his competitive nature; he also knows how much

Zidane's

side needs the three points to reduce the distance from the top of the table, and

Karim Benzema’s

return is a piece of bad news for Atletico’s supporters.

Zidane has called the match a final in the pre-match press conference, although he insisted that a defeat in the derby won’t push them away from the title chance, and they would be alive even if they don’t win against Atletico.

Zidane’s side will be without

Dani Carvajal

,

Eden Hazzard

, and

Diaz

, and Atletico’s only absent man is

Gimenez

, who will be sidelined due to physical discomfort.

Atletico Madrid’s last victory against Real Madrid in the La Liga was in 2016 where they defeated Real Madrid 1-0 in Santiago Bernabeu. They haven’t been able to defeat their old rivals in the league ever since, and this may be Simeone’s biggest ambition to defeat Real Madrid while his side is in the best form.
