The City midfielder sustained a severe back problem when he was 23 years old and playing for Borussia Dortmund.

Ilkay Gundogan

’s career was facing a serious threat when he was 23. The Germany international had to go under surgery and insert a “big screw” in his back to fix it. During his prolific spell at

Borussia Dortmund

, the midfielder was sidelined for 14 months as he struggled with his back problem.

The 30-year-old is pulling off a significant performance at

Manchester City

now, as he fights to grab the

Premier League

Gundogan told

The Guardian

of the problem he faced threatening his career in 2013: “

I was out for 14 months but the worst part was that no one really knew what kind of injury it was.

“I saw a surgeon and he wanted to put a big screw in my back which would not allow me to play football at that level. So, I was scared of not playing again and I’m really grateful I found the right [surgeon].

“Of course I still have to deal with issues but I’m feeling well enough.”

Gundogan has pushed so hard to keep the ball rolling as he feared his playing days were over so early. In 2016, City purchased the Germany international, where he suffered more fitness problems which had him out of action. Although he has to be really careful, his game seems to be taken to a new level under

Pep Guardiola

. He has met the target 13 times and contributed two assists this season.

Manchester City are sitting top of the Premier League table, 14 points clear of

Manchester United

before the derby on Sunday. They are doing great in the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup, and the Champions League Round of 16.
