Arteta on Smith Rowe following in the footsteps of Saka with England

Fri 05 March 2021 | 17:25

The Gunners boss believes the 20-year-old has proven to be worthy of a position with the international team and he is very likely to join teammate, Saka, in the upcoming European Championship.

Mikel Arteta talked about his international hopes for

Emile Smith Rowe

in the upcoming Euro 2020, after

Bukayo Saka

joined

England

as one product of the Gunners academy.

This season, Arteta has chosen to invest in many of

Arsenal

’s academy graduates with Smith Rowe being one of those to gain a regular spot in their squad, and the Spaniard hopes that the 20-year-old will soon be able to join Gareth Southgate’s line-up.

Talking about the Englishman, Arteta said:

“I think it is possible if he shows the same determination as Bukayo, be as humble as he is and play with the personality that he’s done, I think he’s got a great chance.”

“Emile has got all the attributes, all the qualities that’s needed to play for this football club and, in my opinion, to play for the national team.”

“After it is about finding the consistent level that is required, because obviously that level is as good as it gets. But I think he has shown in moments of this season what he can do.”

“So it is about now doing it for longer periods, adding more assists, more goals, being a threat all the time and working as hard as he has been doing because I think he has been phenomenal for us.”

On the other hand, Saka has been one of Arsenal prodigies to rise into prominence at a very young age with his full-back and winger abilities.

Since his Arsenal debut in 2019, the 19-year-old has been able to make 73 appearances for the

Premier League

side while also earning a contract extension with the Gunners.

Saka made his first senior England bow back in 2020 and though he may face some competition in Euro 2020, Southgate could still choose the player to join them in the upcoming competition.

And as for Smith Rowe, many English stars including

Jack Grealish

,

James Maddison

,

Mason Mount

,

Phil Foden

, and

James Ward-Prowse

are considered to be his competitors for a spot with England.
