Fonseca urges Roma to avoid “mistakes in the build-up”

Tue 02 March 2021 | 14:46

The Giallorossi boss warned his men of their upcoming clash with Fiorentina after their recent defeat to AC Milan.

Roma

head-coach, Paulo Fonseca, hopes his men will stop making

“mistakes”

after their defeat to

AC Milan

as they prepare to take down

Fiorentina

in their upcoming Serie A game.

Fonseca’s men only had two wins out of their recent five Serie A games, and according to the Giallorossi boss, the team has been a victim of defensive struggles.

Talking at a press conference, Fonseca said:

“The team suffered more than we wanted, that’s the truth. But how many big chances did Milan create?”

“The team were balanced, the problem is that we create problems for ourselves. It’s not the defensive organization.”

“We make mistakes, we lose balls, mistakes in the build-up. Errors that we have made in other games too.”

“It’s not about organization but about decisions, losing the ball in the build-up play. Someone might say, why do we play like this then, if we get it wrong.”

“If there’s pressure, you need to understand whether to play or not to play.”

“Against Milan we made a mistake, you can’t make a mistake like this, but I’s not a problem of defensive organization and not only the defense, but the attack too.”

“We are working to better understand these moments that allow our opponents to create chances.”

Confirming his plan to call-up

Chris Smalling

and starting

Karash Kumbulla

, he added:

“Kumbulla is ready and will play. Smalling will be called up, but he’s not in the best condition.”

Though there were reports of playing

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

as a false nine, Fonseca denied the rumors as he talked about including

Borja Mayoral

, saying:

“He will play. We have many games, that’s true.”

“In the Europa League we have made a lot of changes, but with so many problems in defense, it’s difficult to manage [Rick] Karsdorp, [Leonardo] Spinazzola, [Bryan] Cristante and [Gianluca] Mancini.”

“We will change two or three players tomorrow.”

“Italian football is difficult for all strikers. He [Borja Mayoral] is young and he’s coming now. If Borja scores, it’s all good. When he doesn’t, he’s bad.”

“I can see things in that way. It’s also true for [Edin] Dzeko: if he scores, it’s OK. If he doesn’t, it’s not good."
