Zidane on Ramos’ future: ‘I want to get him fit, nothing more’

Sun 28 February 2021 | 17:54

The legendary defender has not renewed his contract with Real Madrid as speculations seethe over his future.

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has been cagey over the eventual fate of skipper Sergio Ramos.

The center-back has become a symbol at the Santiago Bernabeu over his 16-year stay, and his contract will be due toward the season's finish.

Los Blancos are attempting to concur terms with the 34-year-old, and a few of Europe's greatest clubs have been connected with an expected move for him on a free exchange come the late spring.

"

You always ask me the same thing – he's an impressive man. I want him to get fit, but apart from that, nothing else. Tomorrow we have a game,"

Zidane told in a press conference on Sunday ahead of a

La Liga

face-off against Real Sociedad.

The 34-year-old Spaniard has not played for the Spanish side since the 0-0 stalemate against Osasuna on January 9.

He had a medical procedure on a knee injury toward the beginning of this current month and could get sidelined until late-March or early-April.

The two clubs most firmly connected with a late spring move for Ramos are

Manchester United

and

Paris Saint-Germain

There have been reports that Ramos has contacted ex-Real Madrid partner

David Beckham

over a potential move to Man Utd, while PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino has not denied his desire for bringing in the Spain international.

"We will see in the coming months. Here, Ramos would find a great club with the obsession to always win. PSG are one of the biggest clubs in the world," the Argentinian said in January.

While the seasoned defender has not openly announced any discontent, reports suggest that the club's offer for the veteran is a one-year contract; however, Ramos demands an expansion that will run for an additional two years.

A few sources recommend this issue has been settled, yet all things considered, Madrid needs to make spending cuts over the late spring, which could convolute concurring terms with the defender.
