Prime time for City as Premier League title race takes shape

Sun 28 February 2021 | 12:16

The countdown is on for Premier League teams as the season enters it’s a very crucial stage. The title race is getting in shape, as is the race for slots in the European competitions. At the lower reaches the battle for survival is set to go a notch higher, with at least six sides embroiled in it.

At the top of the league standings is

Manchester City

, the side out to reclaim the title snatched away last season by

Liverpool

. City were slow starters to the campaign but have picked up well and head to Match Day 26 as firm favorites to win the title.

City are not only favored by the fixtures, they also did themselves a big favor in their matches, with long winning runs. Heading to the next game, thy are from two straight away matches, and won both. They are set to play four straight home games in the league and one of them is against the second placed side, Manchester United.

The first of the four at home is against West Ham United, who have been in really great form lately, it could sound as a bad joke stating that they battled against relegation last season.

West Ham are in the top four and contesting for a place in the Champions League. They’ll be out to give City a run for their money, and new signing Jesse Lingard, on loan from

Manchester United

, will have more than one reason to want to shock City.

City are in blistering form, but have left questions over their defending, which The Hammers will want to exploit, and

place over 2.5 goals as the safest pick on this, in light of the two sides’ scoring forms.

Meanwhile, West Bromwich Albion could make a big step towards survival as they host Brighton. West Brom have the least wins in the league (2), have conceded the most goals and are 11 points below the safety line. On the other hand, Brighton may be out of the relegation zone, but are not completely safe, and will need a win as badly as the Baggies.

These two are however not the best to bet on when it comes to goal scoring and experts point at under 2.5 goals on the game.

Leeds United are the best performing among the newly promoted sides, and they’ve really reaped from Marcelo Bielsa’s attack-minded strategy. They will go into round 26 being the fourth highest scorers in the league and coming from a win, they’ll be fired up for the clash against Aston Villa.

Leeds have two straight home wins in the league and meet a wobbly Aston Villa who are winless in the last two matches. The hosts, Leeds are being backed for a win here.

At Newcastle United, things are not so rosy. Their second straight loss in the last game, against Manchester United, left the team just three points above the relegation region. A run of two wins in the last 14 league matches doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence as they head to their game with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wolves are unbeaten in their last four league matches but have heavily relied on favorable VAR decisions to pick three wins lately. They have four wins in their last 15 league matches and are touted to draw with Newcastle United in this game.

Other matches lined up in the round will see Leicester City hosting Arsenal, as Crystal Palace welcome Fulham while Tottenham will be at home to Burnley and Chelsea square it out with Manchester United in a top-four battle. Bottom placed Sheffield United will be up against champions Liverpool and Everton will be hosting Southampton.
