Özil is a fast, athletic, and technical player with strong dribbling ability, a flexible midfielder who excels as a winger on either flank or as an offensive midfielder at the center of the pitch in an advanced play-making position.

In 2005, Özil moved to Schalke 04's youth system. After starting as a playmaker and central attacking midfielder in place of the suspended Lincoln in DFL-Ligapokal matches against
