The France international has praised his fellow team-mate for “working hard” on training after he has had his first Premier League clash in a few months.

Chelsea

forward

Olivier Giroud

has hailed shot-stopper

Kepa Arrizabalaga

for being “focused” when he received a lot of criticism last year.

Chelsea boss

Thomas Tuchel

gave Kepa his first

Premier League

clash after four months when they locked horns with

Newcastle

on Monday. He pulled off a significant performance in their 2-0 win.

The Spain international moved to Stamford Bridge on a £71 million ($98m) transfer fee in 2018. Following a series of unsuccessful games, he was deprived of playing; however, he has proved qualified behind the scene.

"

I’m happy for him

," added Giroud. "

He’s stayed focused on his job and committed to what he has to do. Every day at training he is working hard to be ready when the manager will ask him to play and he played very well I think, like the team."

Kepa will be the second in the pecking order at Chelsea, notwithstanding his prolific display against Newcastle. Tuchel is going to play Edouard Mendy in the battle against Southampton on Saturday.

Edou is the No 1, this is clear,

” the Chelsea boss said.

“It was clear before the game and it stays like this

.

I am happy Kepa continued with a second clean sheet. It was the moment to let him feel the rhythm and build up his confidence.

It was clear before that we hoped for the best performance, but Edou will be in goal from now on as he recovered physically and mentally and right now, he is the No 1.”
