The Portuguese full-back was part of a potential three-way swap deal involving Barcelona, Inter, and Manchester City.

Joao Cancelo

joined

Manchester City

from

Juventus

with a £58m deal in 2019. Upon his arrival at the English club, the 26-year-old found it hard to secure a place in

Pep Guardiola

’s starting squad. According to

Calcio Mercato

,

Inter

was offered a chance to return their former full-back in a three-way swap deal but they refused this offer. The potential deal included

Lautaro Martinez

’s transfer to

Barcelona

and

Nelson Semedo

’s move to the Premier League. The Italian side were happy with

Achraf Hakimi

’s development in the right-back position and saw no point in returning Cancelo to San Siro. The Portuguese full-back spent the 2017-18 season on a loan deal at Inter and he managed to play 28 games for Luciano Spalletti’s team. After spending an unsuccessful 2019-20 season at Etihad, Cancelo is now a key player for Manchester City. He has scored one goal and provided two assists in his 17 appearances for the Citizens in their current Premier League campaign.
