Milicic: Macarthur looked like a basketball team against Jets

Sun 17 January 2021 | 13:49

While pleased with his team’s victory, Macarthur boss has urged his players to return to their footballing principles.

The A-League debutants managed to gain their second league victory in a breathless clash against

Newcastle Jets

. Two goals by

Loic Puyo

and

Matt Derbyshire

put

Macarthur

ahead in the first half but the Jets dominated the game in the second half and managed to score a 42nd goal by Valentino Yuel. However, this goal was not enough for the Jets to escape the defeat and

Ante Milicic

’s side collected all three points from the match. In a post-match interview, Milicic criticized his team’s performance in the second half.

"We just stopped playing in the second half,"

he told

FOX Sports.

<em>

"We went long every time, we couldn't win the second ball.

"We looked more like a basketball team than a footballing team. And when we go away from what we're strong at we struggled.

"They did well to get the result but in the end we need to get better and play our football for longer periods of the game."

Milicic added:

"We know we're capable of playing. When we really execute the things that we talk about and train for we look a good footballing side.

"But then there's that other part that we need to get better at."
