Gerrard and Lineker pay tribute to Rooney following his retirement

England’s record goal scorer announced his retirement and started his new career as Derby County’s manager.

and England as he has played 120 matches for his country’s national team. The 35-year-old announced his retirement on Friday and started his new job as

’s boss.

Gary Lineker

paid tribute to Rooney with a Twitter post.

“One of our all-time great footballers has retired. It’s never an easy moment for any player but Wayne Rooney has enjoyed a truly wonderful career on the field. Here’s hoping he’s successful off the pitch with Derby County. Well played and good luck.”

Steven Gerrard

who is currently managing


in Scottish Premiership was another one of Rooney’s former teammates who paid tribute to the record goal-scorer. Gerrard posted a photo of him and Rooney at the England National team on Instagram and wrote:

“What a honour it was to share a pitch with Wayne Rooney, incredible player and a great lad as well . All the best with your future and good luck with Derby County.”
