Sat 09 January 2021 | 14:02

Barcelona legend admits the possibility of Messi's departure in the summer but believes that he’s still the finest player in Barca’s squad.

Lionel Messi

’s transfer saga was the most-talked-about subject in the summer transfer window as the player informed his club that he wishes to leave Camp Nou in order to continue his career elsewhere. The Argentinian superstar eventually changed his mind and decided to honor the final year of his contract but the shadow of a possible free transfer still lurks in the Camp Nou as the player’s contract will expire in the upcoming summer.

Manchester City

and

PSG

are considered to be the clubs with the highest potential to add the six-time Ballon d’Or winner to their ranks but the Catalans are hopeful that Messi can still lean toward a contract extension if the club’s presidential election goes in his favor. In a recent interview with

Betfair

, Rivaldo has spoken Messi’s form and his contract situation.

“Lionel Messi has started 2021 very strongly with great performances, goals and assists as we are all used to seeing.

“It's important for him and the club to maintain their relationship, as he might be ending his time as a Barcelona player.

“We still don't know if he will renew his contract, but at least we are watching him play near his best again, which indicates he should keep playing at the highest level for at least 2-3 more seasons.

“We must appreciate the pleasure of watching him perform such magnificent football.

“Anyway, it's important to note that even when Messi isn't playing at his best, he still continues to be the best player at Barcelona, which magnifies his quality and importance to the club.”
