Bielsa pays homage to the football pyramid

Sat 09 January 2021 | 10:32

Marcelo Bielsa has opposed many Premier League managers’ movement when he announced he is prepared to “pay homage” to the FA Cup.

The FA Cup has recently been considered as a distraction by many top-flight clubs, particularly ever since the

Premier League

has started. However,

Marcelo Bielsa

, whose squad is set to go against Crawly on Sunday in the FA Cup, pronounced: “It represents English football in its purest form.

It allows you to link with the history of the clubs in England. That’s why I’m very happy to be in this competition

.”

The Argentinian admitted that a more practical approach by the teams to push for passing through relegation or a Champions League place would be “

understandable and acceptable”.

He stated that there were “

arguments in favour and against

”, but went on to say he would “

give hierarchy to a competition which is the essence of our country and to pay homage to it by competing in this competition”.

“From my point of view, Leeds shouldn’t lose contact with the base of football in this country because those teams give nutrients to the pyramid of the league,”

he said.

Also, because the ambition to play against these top teams has to be available.

“Thirdly, I feel it’s healthy for the bigger teams to be able to help the smaller teams, to be generous with the smaller teams. An expression of generosity is to view them as equals.”

Crawley

manager

John Yems

has persuaded Leeds to give away the prize they will earn from the FA Cup to EFL League Two after Sunday’s clash and the Leeds manager has yet to decide.

Like all lower League sides, West Sussex are also struggling financially due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sunday’s winners will receive £61,500 and the losers will gain £20,500.

The Leeds boss, on the other hand, has convinced

Tyler Roberts

of his crucial role for the club in this year’s campaign. The Wales international, who will not feature for Leeds on Sunday, has caught the attention of many Championship clubs.

Tyler has always been in my plans

,” Bielsa said. “

I value him in the football point of view and also in the human aspect. He has an important role inside our team.

“It is true he is having difficulties to manage to have continuity, but, for me, he is a player who is full of resources and very important for us.”
