Christian Gross: It doesn’t help to talk about the past

Thu 31 December 2020 | 10:02

Schalke’s new manager will experience his first match in charge of the Royal Blue on Saturday.

After an awful start to their 2020-21

Bundesliga

campaign,

Schalke

are trying to turn the situation around with their new manager

Christian Gross

. The 66-year-old will be in charge of the team for the first time in their Saturday clash against

Hertha BSC

and is looking forward to marking a good start to the new calendar year.

“It doesn’t help to always talk about the past. The future lies ahead of us, the new year is about to begin – let’s start it well,”

Schalke are currently in 18th place in the Bundesliga table and their main objective is to get themselves out of the relegation zone as soon as possible. The cooperation with the players seems to be playing a key role in Gross’ approach.

“The players came across well-rested – we trained well and covered a lot of different areas,

“It is important that the players know what we want,

“Not just this week, but for the weeks to come as well.”

Schalke’s new coach is not sure how his first starting XI will look like but he has admitted that he is “fundamentally a fan of a back four” for a defensive setup. Salif Sané and Omar Mascarell’s presence in Gross’s starting XI against Hertha is still uncertain while he won’t be available to use Goncalo Paciencia and Kilian Ludewig due to injury.
