Jordan Henderson Is Proving to Be a Liverpool Great

Thu 10 December 2020 | 19:10

When you think of the great players to ever feature in a Liverpool shirt, the likes of Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush, Graeme Souness and Steven Gerrard all come to mind. Current captain Jordan Henderson is now not far away from joining that list of legends at the club.

Henderson became the first Liverpool captain to lift the Premier League trophy back in July. His leadership skills have proved invaluable for manager Jurgen Klopp, who puts a lot of confidence in his midfielder.

When fit, Henderson rarely misses a game for Liverpool. Although it is often Mo Salah, Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino who pick up the headlines for their goals, Liverpool fans and the German boss know exactly how important their captain is in the team.

Official Recognition of the Year Henderson Has Had?

Henderson was named the FWA Footballer of the Year last season, an award given out by the journalists who cover the sport. There could be more prizes to follow for the Englishman in 2020 as he is +800 in the

Sports Personality of the Year odds from Paddy Power

.

The Premier League-winning captain has just two contenders ahead of him in that betting, F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton at +275 and world snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan at +500. If successful, he will be the first footballer to win the trophy since Ryan Giggs in 2009.

Henderson is ahead of Tyson Fury (+1000), Hollie Doyle (+1600) and Stuart Broad (+20000) in the list of six contenders, which says a lot about what he has achieved over the last 12 months in his sport.

Henderson an Important Player for England Next Summer

It’s not just with Liverpool where Henderson is an important player, he is set to be a big part of the England team who are competing in the European Championship next summer. Gareth Southgate’s men are the +500 co-favorites to win the trophy next summer in what would be the Three Lions’ first major tournament victory since 1966.

Henderson played his part in England’s passage through to the semi-final of the World Cup in Russia in 2018. They

were eventually beaten by Croatia in extra-time

, but they outperformed their odds to reach the last four.

The 30-year-old now has 58 caps for his national team.

He was voted the England Player of the Year in 2019

, which is quite an achievement ahead of the likes of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho.

Liverpool Legacy Still Being Written

When Henderson joined Liverpool from Sunderland in 2011, very few could have predicted he would have the accomplishments he has gone on to achieve at the club. By the time he retires or leaves the club, he could be one of the most successful Liverpool captains ever.

Henderson’s leadership skills are exactly what make him a great captain. The young players at Liverpool are all benefiting from this, something which makes their transition into the first team much easier.

Although he is into his 30s now, the future is still bright for Henderson. He will feel he has so much more to achieve for club and country.
