Barcelona presidential candidate claims that his success at election can persuade Messi to stay at Camp Nou.
Messi
’s current contract at Camp Nou will expire in 2021 and the player will decide whether he wants to renew his contract with the Catalans or pick up another club to continue his career. The player has revealed earlier this year that
Barcelonaofficials have blocked his departure from the club. The 33-year-old superstar has been heavily linked with
Manchester Cityfor a summer transfer but Barcelona’s presidential candidate
Jordi Farre
has claimed that his potential victory in the upcoming elections would persuade Messi to renew his contract with the Blaugrana.
He told
Onda Cero: "Messi wants to stay at Barca. That’s what I know. His family wants to stay at Barcelona and we’re going to work for it.
"I would go as far to say that if we win the elections, Messi will renew his deal. His renewal would be incurred automatically on January 25 if I win the elections the day previous."
Asked about a possible bid for Neymar, Farre responded:
"Neymar’s signing will be cheap because the investment will be greater than the outlay,”
Farre’s biggest rival in the elections is
Joan Laporta
who has been the club’s president between 2003 and 2010. The other candidates are Victor Font, Lluis Fernandez and Agusti Benedito.
