Both players reacted angrily over being subbed off early in their Wednesday match against Salzburg.

Saul Niguez

and

Luis Suarez

were subbed off a little over an hour into

Atletico Madrid

’s Champions League match against Salzburg. Mario Hermoso’s header which was his first goal for the club put Atletico ahead in the first half and Yannick Carrasco’s 86th minute goal doubled Atletico’s score as they secured their qualification to the knock-out stage of the competition. The game was Suarez’s second appearance for Atletico since his recovery from the coronavirus and the Uruguayan failed to register even one shot in his team’s clash against Salzburg.

Diego Simeone

’s early substitution was probably due to his team’s Saturday derby against Real Madrid but the Argentinian coach has insisted that he understands the frustration of Suarez and Saul over being subbed off.

"It is entirely logical," he told Movistar+. "I would have also been angry to leave the field. These are the games where you want to play the full 90 minutes.

"When you are taken off the pitch for someone else, it is understandable they leave the field angry."

Asked about his thoughts on the team’s performance in the group stage, Simeone responded:

"I look back at the times we have made it out of the group stage and am joyful," he said. "It is important for us to be among the best year after year.

"For many it is entirely normal that we qualify, but for me that is not the case."
