Phillips talks about his rivalry with Rice

Wed 09 December 2020 | 17:13

The two should fight for a spot in the defensive midfield position of the England national team.

Kalvin Phillips

has spoken about the rivalry between him and West Ham’s midfielder,

Declan Rice

over their position in the national team. Phillips has been called up for the England national team this year and participate in a couple of matches while he just got promoted to the Premier League with

Leeds United

this year.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Kalvin has had his say on the rivalry that has been created between the two English midfielders:

"Do you know what, I don't really look at it as like that.

"There's a lot of talk about me and Dec [Rice], but it's just about - you know - fighting for a position for your country. I think it's healthy for both of us,"

"He's (Rice) got a lot of experience in the Premier League, as I have not and for him to be playing for England so young is unbelievable.

"Obviously I want to play for England as well, so it's going to be a battle between us.

We're friends as well and we speak to each other quite a bit, it'll be good to play against him,"

Phillips added, somewhat relishing the opportunity to test himself against a similar player with over 100 Premier League appearances.
