Souness blames Xhaka: ‘big players don’t allow that to happen’

Former Liverpool player and manager Souness believes Xhaka should have had more awareness to stop the attack when his team-mate tried to leave the pitch.

Graeme Souness blames

Arsenal

midfielder

Granit Xhaka

for failing to cover for

Thomas Partey

as he walked off the field before Tottenham’s second goal.

"Big players, leaders, don't allow that to happen on the football pitch," the Sky Sports pundit said.

"As a central midfield player, as a holding central midfield player - I don't know what Xhaka is, it's been about six or seven years and I'm not quite sure what he is - the alarm bells are ringing.

"All the time you're looking over your shoulder, 'where are we vulnerable?'. But they just empty the space, [Giovani] Lo Celso picks it up, on you go, 2-0, game over, possibly."

Son Heung-min found the net early to make it 1-0 for the Spurs, and then Harry Kane linked up with Son later to make it 2-0.

Spurs are flying high in the league while Arteta’s men are in trouble, and they sit 15th in the table.
