Owen: 'If you are thinking about changing Man Utd's GK, it's time'

Dean Henderson can become Manchester United's new number one after David de Gea got a knee injury, as per Michael Owen

De

Gea

has been the Red Devils' first-choice goalkeeper since the time of his £19 million ($25m) transfer from Atletico Madrid in June 2011.

The 30-year-old has presented United's shirt 419 times in all rivalries while getting his hands on the

Premier League

, the FA Cup, League Cup, and

Europa League

making himself known as one of the best keepers in Europe.

Henderson

got back from a two-year loan at

Sheffield United

over late spring with the end goal of finding a regular playing time in the squad, yet he had to compete with De Gea's favorable position in the team.

Be that as it may, Henderson was given his first Premier League appearance of the season on Sunday game against Southampton after De Gea endured a knee injury in the first half, and now he will have the opportunity to safeguard Man Utd's goal until the Spanish international is recovered.

Owen

believes Solskjaer had been trying not to make such change as he fears it could cause a feud in the changing room, however now he can easily seize the ideal opportunity without self-reproach.

“If you are thinking about changing the goalkeeper, this is the time," the former Red Devils forward told Premier League TV.

“I don’t think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants confrontation, I don’t think he wants to drop him.

“But in this situation, all of a sudden, ‘hey, you went off injured and he has done nothing wrong’.

“It is the perfect opportunity. If he had any of those thoughts over the last few months when mistakes were made, now is your time.”
